Requirements for Joining the U.S. Military

To join the enlisted ranks, in general you must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or Green Card holder
    • Non-citizens must speak, read, and write English fluently.
    • Non-citizens must currently live in the U.S.
  • Be in good health
  • Be 17 to 40 years old (different branches have different age requirements)
  • Have a high school diploma (some branches will accept a GED)
  • Pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test

To join as an officer, you must also have attended college.

The Green Card

American immigration law offers multiple options for foreigners who want to live in the U.S. The Permanent Resident Card like the name implies, entitles you to live and work permanently in the United States. You can apply through a U.S. consulate while you are living overseas, or after you arrive in the U.S. To win your card, you must fit one of the various categories, for example:

  • You are a relative of a U.S. citizen.
  • You are a worker with exceptional skills. Unskilled laborers can apply, but they are a lower preference.
  • You are a political refugee.
  • You are a victim of human trafficking or abuse.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service has all the options online. Usually, you need a sponsor to file a petition for permanent resident status. The application process involves a lot more forms, an interview, photographs and fingerprints.

How to Join the U.S. Army If You Are Not a U.S. Citizen

To be accepted into any service academy except for the Coast Guard Academy, you must first be nominated to the school by either:

  • A U.S. senator
  • A U.S. representative
